What is Allergy ?

Allergy is an increased sensitivity to a foreign substance (called an allergen) that causes the body’s defense system (the immune system) to overreact when defending itself. Allergens can stimulate an immune response when you breathe in or touch the allergen, or by ingestion of food or beverage, or from injections of medication.


What are Allergens and How does Allergy affects our body ?

Common allergies include nose allergy like rhinitis, sinusitis, skin rash, itching, bronchitis, asthma.. You can get allergic reactions from airborne pollens, insects, rice dust, wheat dust, house dust, fungal spores and may be from food like nuts, chips, toffees, chocolate, preservative items, etc. It causes frequent and long duration cough, nasal congestion, skin rash, itching, breathing difficulty and sputum production. This can occur either on change of season or all throughout the years.


Can Allergy increase or cause more harm to our body ?

Yes, Allergy can start from skin allergy; can involve nose, throat or sinuses, and also our lung pipes. This can start from young age. Patient can have signs and symptoms of skin allergy, then allergic rhinitis and later Asthma. It can also start from allergy of lung pipe or nose and sinuses.


What is Bronchitis ?

Bronchitis is swelling of main branches of lung i.e. Bronchi. It can cause frequent cough, post cough vomiting and breathing difficulty in children. It can be temporary or remain for long time.


What is Asthma ?

Asthma is swelling in the muscle layer of small lung pipes. It can be transient or temporary, that can be in young child , less than 5 years of age. It can remain for long period or can increase, if not controlled or treated at right time. There may be family history of allergy or asthma.


Is Asthma a Taboo. Does children with Asthma, always have Asthma ?

Asthma is not a Taboo. Childhood asthma is because of swelling of small lung pipes, which can block the air to pass and easily allows the mucus to block the lung pipe. If there is no family history of asthma or allergy then, most of the children get completely controlled, if takes proper medicine from the specialist.


Can Allergy or Asthma controlled or cured ?

Symptoms of Asthma can be fully controlled by taking proper precautions and treatment.


What are the medicines to treat Allergy or Asthma ?

Medicines given to treat allergy or asthma can be in the form of syrups, tablets, Nasal spray or inhalers (Puff or rotacaps) or medicines given by nebuizations. They are prescribed according to the age, condition of patients. They can be given for short interval or for long time according to the patient’s condition and severity of illness.


Can we or our child get habit of medicines or inhaler ?

Do these inhalers cause side effects or decrease growth of my child ?

They do not cause any major side effects or decrease bone growth. They are given for long time, but they go directly to your lung, airways, does not cause any effects on body or bone. Correct technique of taking medicine is important according to specialist or pulmonologist’s advice.


Does oral syrup or steam better than inhaler or nebulizers ?

Oral syrups or medicines may be given to children with problems for short period. If given for long time or very often then they may cause some side effects like, increase irritability, restlessness. Medicines in the form of puff properly go to lung pipes or its branches and have better effects and less side effects.


How can we get to know about Allergy ?

Allergy can be known specifically by getting an Allergy test. There are blood test and skin test. Blood test can tell you about presence of non specific allergy in our body. Skin test can tell about specific allergens sensitizing our body. This can cause allergy symptoms.


Can food causes Allergy ?

Generally food allergies are less. Fried food, junk food, pickles, butter, chips, nuts and food with preserva tive or coloring items can increase the allergy symptoms.
